Star Indian batter Virat Kohli is reportedly dealing with a neck sprain, which might rule him out of Delhi’s upcoming Ranji Trophy match against Saurashtra. The sixth Elite Group D match of the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season is scheduled to take place in Rajkot from January 23 to 26. According to a report in the Times of India, Kohli even underwent an injection treatment for his condition.
“Virat Kohli had a neck sprain and even took an injection for the same. There is a possibility of him skipping the first of the two Ranji Trophy games left, and a clear picture could come if the DDCA selectors are given an update,” a source told TOI.
Kohli’s Possible Participation: Uncertainty Remains
A senior official from the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) stated that Kohli’s name might be included in the squad with a note indicating “subject to availability.” Despite the uncertainty, there is a possibility that Kohli may join the Delhi team in Rajkot for training sessions, even if he does not play in the match.
Interestingly, Kohli last appeared in a Ranji Trophy match for Delhi in 2012. His participation in domestic cricket is rare due to his commitments with the Indian national team and international fixtures.
The Delhi team is scheduled to leave for Rajkot on Monday, January 20. They are expected to have two practice sessions before the crucial match against Saurashtra. The decision regarding Kohli’s involvement is anticipated closer to the match date.
Rishabh Pant’s Availability a Boost for Delhi
While Kohli’s participation remains uncertain, Delhi has received a significant boost with the confirmation of star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant‘s availability. Pant, who is recovering from a prolonged injury layoff, is expected to feature in the match against Saurashtra and could also play the second game against Railways.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has emphasized the importance of Indian players participating in domestic competitions, underlining the significance of the Ranji Trophy for players like Kohli and Pant.
Domestic Cricket’s Growing Importance
The BCCI’s push for national players to engage in domestic matches highlights the crucial role of tournaments like the Ranji Trophy in nurturing and maintaining competitive form. While fans eagerly await updates on Kohli’s fitness, his potential return to the Ranji Trophy would undoubtedly be a highlight for Delhi and a significant moment in the ongoing season.
Whether Kohli takes the field or not, his presence in Rajkot for training and Pant’s return could serve as a morale boost for the Delhi squad as they aim for success in the Elite Group D matches.
