Robin Uthappa Criticizes Kohli for Rayudu’s 2019 World Cup Snub:Ambati Rayudu was a notable omission from India’s 2019 ICC ODI World Cup squad, despite his significant contributions during the lead-up to the tournament. Having played 10 ODIs as part of India’s preparations, Rayudu was controversially left out of the 15-member squad for the marquee event, held between May 30 and July 14.

Former Indian cricketer Robin Uthappa, a key member of the 2007 ICC T20 World Cup-winning squad under MS Dhoni, has openly criticized Virat Kohli for this decision. Uthappa suggested that Kohli, who was India’s captain during the tournament, played a decisive role in Rayudu’s exclusion, raising concerns about favoritism and decision-making within the team.

Ambati Rayudu’s World Cup Dream Dashed

Rayudu, a consistent performer for India in the No. 4 batting position, had high hopes of making the World Cup squad. However, his dream was shattered when he wasn’t included in the final list. Even after Shikhar Dhawan’s injury ruled him out mid-tournament, Rayudu was overlooked as a replacement player. This controversial decision led to widespread debate among fans and cricket experts alike.

Uthappa, during a conversation with Lallantop, shed light on how Rayudu’s omission unfolded. “If he (Virat Kohli) didn’t like anyone, he didn’t feel someone was good, then they were cut. (Ambati) Rayudu is the prime example,” Uthappa remarked.

Uthappa Calls Out Unfair Practices in Selection

Uthappa didn’t mince words in criticizing the way Rayudu was treated, calling it “unfair.” He highlighted the emotional toll such decisions can take on players. “Everybody has preferences, I agree, but you cannot close the door on a player after taking him to the cusp. He had World Cup clothes and a World Cup kit bag; everything was there at his home. A player would be thinking that he is going to the World Cup. But you shut the door on him. That wasn’t fair according to me,” Uthappa said.

Rayudu’s exclusion remains one of the most debated topics in Indian cricket, raising questions about the transparency and impartiality of selection processes during crucial tournaments.
