Ravichandran Ashwin, one of India’s most celebrated cricketers, left fans stunned with his sudden announcement of retirement from international cricket. The legendary all-rounder returned home to Chennai from Australia on Thursday, receiving a heartfelt welcome from his family at the airport. Even his parents, who greeted him with teary eyes, admitted that his decision came as an unexpected shock.
A Shocking Revelation from Ashwin’s Family
Ashwin’s father opened up about the surprise and emotional toll the announcement had on the family. Speaking to News 18, he hinted that “humiliation” might have played a role in Ashwin’s decision.
“I too came to know last minute, actually,” his father said. “What was going on in his mind, I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued.”
He further added, “It’s his wish and desire; I cannot interfere in that. But the way he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation.”

A Career Marked by Excellence and Resilience

Ashwin has been a cornerstone of India’s success in Test cricket for over a decade. Known for his exceptional bowling skills, he leaves behind an illustrious career as the second-highest wicket-taker for India in international cricket. His abrupt retirement came as a double-edged sword for his family.
“No doubt about it (emotional moment for the family), because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change, retirement, gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting it because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own,” his father explained.
A Hint from the Team Management?
Ashwin’s exit raises questions about his treatment by the team management. In the recent series against Australia, Ashwin only featured in the pink-ball Test, replacing Washington Sundar. However, he was benched for the third Test in Brisbane, where Ravindra Jadeja was preferred over him. The signals were clear—Ashwin was no longer India’s first-choice spinner.
Despite these setbacks, Ashwin’s legacy as one of India’s greatest cricketers remains untarnished. His fans, family, and cricket enthusiasts worldwide continue to cherish his remarkable contributions to the game.
