Prithvi Shaw Reacts After Being Dropped from Mumbai's Vijay Hazare Trophy Squad
Prithvi Shaw, the young Indian batter, expressed his disappointment after being excluded from Mumbai’s squad for the first three matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Shaw took to Instagram on Tuesday evening to share his frustration while highlighting his impressive List-A career statistics. Despite his stellar numbers, Shaw sarcastically questioned his exclusion from the team.
Reacting to his omission, Prithvi Shaw shared his remarkable List-A stats in an Instagram Story, indirectly questioning the selectors’ decision. The 25-year-old batter has played 65 List-A matches, scoring 3399 runs at an impressive average of 55.7 and a strike rate of 125.8. His List-A career also includes 10 centuries and 14 half-centuries, proving his capabilities as a top-order batter.
In his heartfelt post, Shaw wrote:
“Tell me God, what more do I have to see, if 65 innings, 3399 runs at an average of 55.7 with a strike rate of 126, I’m not good enough but I will keep my faith in you and hopefully people believe me in still, cause I will come back for sure. OM SAI RAM.”
A String of Poor Performances and Missed Opportunities
Prithvi Shaw’s exclusion follows a challenging period in his cricket career. Earlier, he was dropped from Mumbai’s squad for the Ranji Trophy. Shaw worked on his fitness and returned to represent Mumbai in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. However, his performance remained inconsistent during the tournament.
In the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shaw scored just 197 runs in 9 matches at an average of 21.88. Although he played an impactful knock against Vidarbha in the quarterfinal, his performances in the final stages were disappointing. He managed scores of 8 and 10 in the last two matches against Baroda and Madhya Pradesh.
Shaw’s struggles extended to the IPL as well. He went unsold during the IPL mega auction despite being presented twice at a base price of INR 75 lakh. In IPL 2024, he scored 198 runs at an average of 24.75, including a lone half-century, and spent six matches on the bench.
Concerns Over Shaw’s Discipline and Form
Former Delhi Capitals assistant coach Pravin Amre spoke to the Times of India about Shaw’s discipline issues during his time at the franchise. Amre emphasized that Shaw’s exclusion should serve as a wake-up call.
“I was there in the management when we backed him, but I was also there in the decision-making group, which dropped him due to indiscipline… I hope he takes this IPL auction snub positively. It’s an eye-opener for him.”
Shreyas Iyer, Shaw’s teammate, also weighed in on his struggles after Mumbai’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy win. Iyer stressed the importance of accountability for professional players like Shaw.
“We can’t babysit anyone, right? Every professional who is playing at this level, they need to know what they should be doing… He has to sit back, put a thinking cap on and then figure out himself. He will get the answer.”
Prithvi Shaw’s International Career So Far
Prithvi Shaw has represented India in all three formats, playing 5 Tests, 6 ODIs, and 1 T20I, amassing 528 runs across formats. His last international appearance was in July 2021 during a T20I match against Sri Lanka. Despite his potential, Shaw’s career has seen highs and lows, with fitness, discipline, and form often being questioned.
As Shaw works towards making a comeback, he remains determined to silence his critics and prove his worth once again.
