The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee is set to convene in Mumbai on Saturday to finalize India’s squad for two major assignments: the three-match ODI series against England and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Jasprit Bumrah Returns, Fitness Remains Crucial
Star pacer Jasprit Bumrah is expected to make his way into India’s 15-member squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, as per a report by India Today. Bumrah, currently managing a back injury, will likely be included in the squad announced by chief selector Ajit Agarkar during a press conference at Wankhede Stadium. However, his participation hinges on passing fitness assessments.
Bumrah’s back issues have kept him from bowling in recent games, including the second innings of the fifth Test against Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground from January 3 to 6, 2025. The 31-year-old pacer from Ahmedabad last played a 50-over match on November 19, 2023, during the ODI World Cup final against Australia at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
According to insiders, selectors aim for Bumrah to participate in at least one competitive match before the Champions Trophy to ensure his readiness. “Selectors want Bumrah to play at least one competitive match before the Champions Trophy to assess his fitness and make a final decision,” sources revealed.

Karun Nair Misses Out Despite Stellar Form
Despite an outstanding domestic season, Karun Nair has reportedly been overlooked for India’s squad for the upcoming tournaments. The 33-year-old batter, representing Vidarbha in the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2024-25, amassed a staggering 752 runs in just eight matches, boasting an incredible batting average of 752.00 with five centuries in seven innings.
However, his performances were not enough to secure a recall. “Selectors feel that it would be unwise to recall Nair, who last represented India in 2017, just before a major tournament,” sources indicated.
Nair, who has a triple century to his name in Test cricket, last featured in a 50-over international match for India on June 13, 2016, against Zimbabwe in Harare.
Sanju Samson Also Overlooked
Sanju Samson, another prominent name often discussed for India’s white-ball squad, is also reportedly absent from the selection radar for the Champions Trophy. While Samson has delivered notable performances in the past, the selectors appear to be focusing on a more consistent core group for the prestigious tournament.
