Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a quiet return to Chennai on Thursday, just a day after announcing his retirement from international cricket during the ongoing Test series against Australia. The news left fans stunned, especially following the rain-hit third Test match in Brisbane that ended in a draw.

Ashwin was escorted out of the Chennai International Airport by local officials while fans clicked pictures and took brief interviews. He then left for his home in a black car with his wife and children. Upon reaching home, he was welcomed with grand celebrations, music, and joy.

Heartwarming Welcome at Home

Ashwin’s arrival was met with traditional warmth and love from his family. His father greeted him in a classic Indian style, kissing his cheek and embracing him warmly. His mother, visibly emotional, stood by with tears in her eyes. Fans gathered around to honor their hero with garlands, cheers, and requests for autographs.

This momentous occasion highlighted the respect and admiration Ashwin commands as one of India’s finest cricketers.

Ashwin’s Legacy in International Cricket

Ashwin’s sudden announcement caught the cricketing world off-guard. The legendary spinner has been a cornerstone of Indian cricket, taking 537 wickets in 106 Test matches, making him the second-highest wicket-taker for India in Tests, only behind Anil Kumble, who has 619 wickets. Ashwin also shone in ODIs, claiming 156 wickets in 116 matches, and in T20Is, where he secured 72 wickets in 65 games.

Starting his international career in 2010 with an ODI debut, Ashwin made an impactful Test debut the following year. His sharp skills and strategic mindset earned him accolades and established him as one of the best spinners in the game.

Despite retiring from international cricket, Ashwin will continue playing in domestic and league cricket, including the Indian Premier League (IPL), where he will represent the Chennai Super Kings in the upcoming season.

The Race to Replace Ashwin

The spotlight now shifts to the next generation of spinners vying to take Ashwin’s place. Three potential candidates are in contention, although two of them are yet to make their international debuts.

Australia’s spinner Nathan Lyon expressed his thoughts on Ashwin’s announcement, saying to Fox Cricket,

“We spoke about this after the game, and we were surprised by their celebration, especially considering the match’s context and our performance. We are proud of how we played.”

Former cricketer Brad Haddin echoed similar sentiments, stating,

“I was surprised to see their reaction. They had only avoided the follow-on, and there was still a lot left in the match.”

Adding to the discussion, former pacer Brett Lee recalled,

“I remember England saying something similar in 2005 when we were playing for a draw and celebrated a little.”

India’s jubilation was evident when Aakash Deep hit a boundary to surpass the follow-on mark during the fourth day. The dressing room, including coach Gautam Gambhir, captain Rohit Sharma, and star batsman Virat Kohli, celebrated visibly, showing their relief and joy.
