Virat Kohli and Sam Konstas Clash: India’s senior batter Virat Kohli and Australia’s 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas were involved in a mid-pitch altercation during the first session of the ongoing Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The incident, which unfolded after the 10th over of the morning, added a fiery edge to an already intense contest.
The Clash: Shoulder Bump Sparks Heated Exchange
The drama began when Kohli and Konstas accidentally bumped shoulders while moving across the pitch between overs. Both players immediately turned back, engaging in a heated exchange of words. The situation quickly escalated before Australia’s opener Usman Khawaja and umpire Michael Gough stepped in to defuse the tension.
"Have a look where Virat walks. Virat's walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind whatsoever."

Replays later revealed that Konstas, after finishing his glove adjustments, was walking straight towards the other end of the pitch. At the same time, Kohli, tossing the ball in his hand, veered sharply off his path and crossed into Konstas’ line, leading to the bump.
“I think the emotions got to both of us,” Konstas admitted to Channel 7 during the second session. “I didn’t quite realise, I was doing my gloves, then a little shoulder charge, but it happens in cricket.”
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting, commenting on Channel 7, criticized Kohli’s actions. “Have a look at where Virat walks,” Ponting remarked. “Virat’s walked one whole pitch over to his right and instigated that confrontation. No doubt in my mind, whatsoever.”
ICC Code of Conduct: Possible Consequences for Kohli
The incident also drew attention from former umpire Simon Taufel, who analyzed Kohli’s movement on Channel 7. He pointed out that Kohli’s deviation could potentially fall under “inappropriate physical contact” as per the ICC’s Code of Conduct.
“This long shot that’s been provided by the director is really interesting because it shows Virat Kohli actually changing his line to get into the personal space of Sam Konstas,” Taufel explained. “Now, there’s a clause within the ICC Code of Conduct that talks about inappropriate physical contact. The umpires and the referee will likely review this closely at the end of the day to determine if any action is warranted.”

Konstas Shines Despite the Altercation

Despite the mid-pitch clash, Sam Konstas showcased a remarkable performance in his Test debut. The young batter scored an aggressive half-century off just 52 balls, taking on India’s premier bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj.
Konstas, who replaced Nathan McSweeney for this match, overcame a slow start and displayed fearless batting. He notched up 60 off 65 deliveries, including six fours and two sixes, with 34 runs coming off Bumrah alone. His highlight shots included a reverse scoop for six over the slips and a cleverly executed flick over wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant.
High-Intensity Rivalry: A Kohli Trademark
Test matches between India and Australia have historically been high-octane affairs, often featuring fiery confrontations. This is not Kohli’s first such incident; the Indian superstar has previously clashed with Australian players. Notable episodes include his heated exchange with Tim Paine in 2018 and a memorable duel with Mitchell Johnson during his century in Adelaide in 2014.
As the series progresses, the latest altercation adds another chapter to the storied rivalry, keeping fans on the edge of their seats.
