The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction witnessed an extraordinary moment when 13-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player ever to be sold at an IPL auction. The Rajasthan Royals (RR) secured the young talent for ₹1.1 crore, creating headlines across the cricketing world. RR captain Sanju Samson shed light on the rationale behind this groundbreaking decision, emphasizing the franchise’s philosophy of nurturing young talent.
Vaibhav Suryavanshi: The 13-Year-Old Sensation of IPL 2025
In an interview with South African cricket legend AB de Villiers on his YouTube channel, Sanju Samson shared insights into the decision-making process.
“I have seen his highlights. All of the people in the Rajasthan decision-making group saw him bat at the U19 Test match vs Australia in Chennai, where he scored a hundred off 60-70 balls. The shots that he played there, it felt like, that’s something special,” Samson said.
Samson added, “We felt like we have to have those kinds of individuals in the side and see where they go.”
This bold move reflects Rajasthan Royals’ commitment to identifying and investing in future stars, a philosophy that has yielded champions like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, and Dhruv Jurel in the past.

Suryavanshi’s Meteoric Rise in Cricket

Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s rise in cricket has been nothing short of phenomenal. He burst onto the scene in 2024, breaking records consistently. Following the IPL 2025 auction, he showcased his skills in the ACC Men’s U19 Asia Cup 2024, finishing with an impressive average of 44 and a staggering strike rate of 145.
The young prodigy has already etched his name in the history books by becoming the youngest-ever player to participate in both the Ranji Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. Should he play in the upcoming IPL season, he will also become the youngest player to debut in the tournament’s history.
Rajasthan Royals’ Legacy of Grooming Young Talent
Sanju Samson emphasized the Royals’ commitment to developing future stars for Indian cricket.
“Rajasthan Royals have a history of doing this. They find out talents and make them champions. For example, there is a Yashasvi Jaiswal who came to RR as a youngster and now is a rockstar of the Indian team. There is Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel—they all fall under that line. I think RR loves that kind of thing. Yes, we want to win the IPL, but we also want to make sure that we are giving enough champions to Indian cricket,” Samson explained.
The team’s vision aligns perfectly with the inclusion of Vaibhav Suryavanshi, ensuring that the Rajasthan Royals not only remain a competitive force in the IPL but also contribute significantly to Indian cricket.
With Indian cricket legend Rahul Dravid taking over as coach for IPL 2025, the stage is set for Vaibhav Suryavanshi to flourish and add another remarkable chapter to the Rajasthan Royals’ legacy.
